Working with Lights

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Using the supplied lights is simple. Just load them into your design from the Lights page of the Furniture Album in the Design Editor, making sure that the tabletop models are positioned at the correct height. Now when you go to the View Editor, the lights will appear.

If you set the time of day to full sun or cloudy, your lights will be turned off. If the time of day is sunset, or night, the lights will be turned on.

You can also turn all of the lights on or off by clicking the Lights On/ Lights Off button. If you have included flickering lights the flicker effect can be started or stopped by clicking Flicker On/ Flicker Off. The only standard light that flickers is the TableTop light.

Individual lights can be turned on or off simply by clicking them in the picture.

Customizing Lights

You can customize a supplied light by changing its lens color and by adding information to the end of its name in the Design Editor.

To make a red Early American Lamp, just load a normal one and change the yellow lens color to be red, just as you might recolor any other piece.

To make a Globe flicker and decrease its range, change its name to GLOBE*F>100 The * must follow the normal name as it tells the View Editor that additional lighting information follows the regular name. The F says to flicker the light, the > indicates that a new range follows and the 100 is the new range.

Two lights can accept additional parameters -- KLEG and SPOT. For these you can make a change like so: SPOT*^150+45 or KLEG*^55-34. The ^ indicates that a spread for the light follows. This is the spread angle of the light is in whole degrees. The + or - indicates that the directional light is to be tipped down(+) or up(-) by that many whole degrees.

There is only one very limited way to make your own lights. If you make your own piece of furniture and give it the name of one of the lights below or call it BULB or SPOT, it will be treated as a light by the View Editor. This is most easily done by arranging things so that the first piece is an arrangement that is later combined to make the new piece represents the light. Naming that piece BULB and setting the first color of the piece to the desired light color will often result in an acceptable effect.
